In 2019, I started Afriset Tailors which is a small fashion business. I\u2019ve always wanted my products to reflect who we are: bold, creative, and proudly African. That\u2019s why I design everything from dolls to mats to wedding outfits that celebrate our heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the journey hasn\u2019t always been easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I began with very little, just two employees, limited materials, and a workshop that was far from ideal. Customers would place orders, but I often couldn\u2019t meet deadlines because I didn\u2019t have the supplies or equipment I needed. I was trying my best, but I was falling behind. To make matters worse, my first location wasn\u2019t in a good environment. It was hard to find, the surroundings weren\u2019t clean, and it ended up costing me business. I remember two clients who had come to order wedding outfits, they took one look at the space and said, \u201cWe\u2019re sorry, we can\u2019t come back. You\u2019ll need to move somewhere better.\u201d<\/em> That really hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things turned around when I received funding through Ota Kopa, a loan product offered by HEVA Fund. That support made a big difference. I used the funds to buy two new machines, stock up on materials, and hire two more designers. For the first time, I could confidently meet customer demand and deliver on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also moved my workshop to Adams Arcade Business Park on Ngong Road (Nairobi). Now I have a clean, professional space with proper signage and parking. Before, I used vague landmarks like the nearby church to direct people. Now I can simply send a pin. In fact, I\u2019ve gained new clients who walked in just because they saw my new branded sign from the road at the new location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This funding has done more than just improve production. It\u2019s opened doors. I can now attend industry events, pop-up markets, network with other creatives, and showcase my work in ways I couldn\u2019t before. I feel confident, equipped, and proud of the space I\u2019ve built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
